The future of driving is transforming rapidly, as seen at this year’s CES in Las Vegas, where automakers showcased groundbreaking in-cabin technology, blending AI, infotainment, and personalization into vehicles.

Hyundai Mobis unveiled a holographic windshield that projects driving information, entertainment, and safety alerts directly onto the glass. The display adapts to passengers’ views, offering different content to the front-row seat while keeping the driver’s line of sight clear. Hyundai’s focus is on creating a safer, more immersive driving experience by reducing distractions.

BMW introduced its Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X, projecting minimal, critical driving information onto the windshield to avoid clutter. Unlike the “smartphone on wheels” concept seen in many vehicles, BMW’s approach is aimed at reducing redundant data, ensuring drivers focus on the road.

Sony Honda Mobility presented its upcoming Afeela 1, an EV featuring a conversational AI-powered voice assistant. This AI agent proactively interacts with drivers, delivering real-time updates and entertainment. The vehicle’s infotainment system, complete with a panoramic screen, will debut in North America later this year, with deliveries expected in 2026.

Honda also highlighted its 0 Series EVs, focusing on ultra-personalized experiences through its AISMO OS. The operating system will manage everything from automated driving to infotainment and evolve through post-purchase updates. Additionally, Honda is working on expanding EV infrastructure through its IONNA charging network, ensuring access to over 100,000 charging stations by 2030.

While these innovations show promise, experts like Ian Reagan from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety caution that new features must prioritize safety. Voice assistants, for instance, can keep drivers’ eyes on the road, but poorly implemented systems could become sources of distraction.

CES 2025 highlights how cars are evolving from mere transportation tools into digital ecosystems. Automakers are balancing safety, personalization, and sustainability, hinting at a future where vehicles offer far more than just a ride.
